Dog and Cough Update

Quick exchange with neighbor in the driveway reveals that she called the SPCA and they immediately knew what dog she was talking about as his owners had already called frantically looking for him. So no dog for me.

Yet.

And honestly, since I am barely keeping two adult humans and one humanette alive and well these days with my work schedule this week, the pooch is lucky I didn't claim him as my own. I suspect dogs are more demanding than 10-year-olds in some ways.

Speaking of 10-year-olds, I won't be surprised if the SPCA or it's humanette equivalent shows up at my doorstep today after my conversation yesterday in Walgreen's with the (inept) pharmacist:

Me: We need something for a cough. A horrible cough. An all night cough that makes me want to stick knitting needles in my ears.
Him: Well, I'm sure it's no fun for you either, missy, now is it (to Carlie).
Me: Heh (skeptically)
Him: (handing me children's cough syrup) A tablespoon of this ought to do it.
Me: I've been giving her the adult stuff. Three or Four tablespoons. And she's still coughing. All night. Loudly.
Him: That's too much! You can't give her that much! This has dextromethoraphan in it. It's a very strong medicine.
Me: Me, well it's not like it's going to kill her.

And we got out of there. With the adult cough syrup. Which she only took a normal dose of because the switch from Claritin to Zyrtec seems to have been the magic bullet.

And no need to comment on my overmedicating my child. She has a high tolerance. It's genetic. It's how my people roll. You don't even want to know how much cough syrup I take at night if I have a cough. Not to mention the 800-1200 mg of ibuprofen for aches and pains. Seriously HIGH TOLERANCE in everyone in my family. Served my sister and I well in many drinking contests though.

Ha! We're a high tolerance family too...well, the kids and I are since they come from me and K does not :-) Same Ibuprofen dosage here too. When K and I were dating he had some painkillers from knee surgery and I'd have such wicked headaches that he'd say here, try one of these...it was like the gods were coddling my head in sweet comfort-love those pills! So glad the Zyrtec worked.

Oh, that's hilarious. You did a good deed, giving that pharmacist something to feel all self-righteous about.

My daughter gets horribly nasty coughs that last forever. I tried every cough medicine under the sun, and the only thing that helps is Benedryl...and after talking to her doctor about it, he said a little spoonful of honey is actually proven to work just as well or better!

I'm in the Seinfeld camp of medicine dosage which is one milligram shy of lethal.

Personally I cherish my tolerance for Benedryl and WINE, combined, natch.

My neighbor used to always joke about giving her kids Benadryl and sending them to bed so she could have a glass of wine. My enginerd hudband thought she was serious! You already have a grandkid so I'm not worried about your mother skills.....

It's not the cough syrup we have to worry about. It's overdosing on licking hand sanitizer.

Yay for Zyrtec. Or the Walgreen generic, Walzyr.

How funny- the dog was looking for you to be it's new owner since it probably dug a hole in it's own yard and couldn't remember how to get back home.
